Overview
In north-eastern South Africa and covering about 19,500 square kilometres, Kruger is among the largest wildlife reserves in Africa. It holds roughly 150 mammal and more than 500 bird species, including the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Running some 360 kilometres north to south, it has several gates and rest camps, and can be visited self-drive or on guided safaris.
History
Proclaimed a wildlife sanctuary in 1898 and a national park in 1926, it is among South Africa's oldest protected areas and a leading tourism destination.
