Overview
In Lao Cai province at about 1,600 metres, Sapa was built as a hill station under French rule. The surrounding slopes are terraced by Hmong, Dao and Tay communities and shift through flooded, green and golden seasons. Trails lead to Cat Cat, Ta Van and Lao Chai villages, and Fansipan, at 3,143 metres the highest peak in Indochina, can be reached by cable car.
History
The French established a hill station here in the late 19th century for its cool climate, and it grew famous through trekking tourism in the late 20th; several ethnic minority communities live around it.
