History
The name Ha Long comes from Vietnamese legend: the Jade Emperor sent dragons to defend Vietnam, and as they plunged into the sea they spat out jewels that became the islands. Geologically these limestone islands formed about 500 million years ago, shaped by sea-level changes and erosion into today's scenery. It was first inscribed as a natural World Heritage Site in 1994 and extended in 2000 for its outstanding aesthetic value. Cruise tourism has grown rapidly, making it a cornerstone of Vietnam's visitor economy.
