Statue of Liberty

Overview

The Statue of Liberty is one of America's most famous landmarks, 93 metres tall including its pedestal. The copper figure holding a torch was a gift from France marking the centenary of American independence, and was the first sight of America for countless immigrants. Visitors take the ferry to Liberty Island and can climb to the pedestal or the crown for views over the harbour.

History

The statue was designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, modelled on Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty. Its iron framework was engineered by Gustave Eiffel, later of Eiffel Tower fame. It was unveiled on 28 October 1886, designated a national monument in 1924 and listed as a World Heritage Site in 1984.
