Overview
Established in 1872 as the world's first national park and inscribed as World Heritage in 1978, Yellowstone sits on a vast volcanic caldera and holds around half of the world's geothermal features. Old Faithful erupts roughly every ninety minutes, and the Grand Prismatic Spring is famous for its orange and deep blue rings. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and its falls are here too, along with bison, elk and grey wolves.
History
Created by an act of Congress in 1872 as the world's first national park, inscribed as World Heritage in 1978 and restocked with grey wolves in 1995 to restore the ecosystem.
