The Grand Canyon is one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders, carved by the Colorado River over millions of years and exposing two billion years of Earth's geological history.

History

The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River over five to six million years, exposing roughly two billion years of geological history. Hopi, Navajo and other Native American peoples have lived here for more than 3,000 years. Major John Wesley Powell led the first complete boat expedition through it in 1869. It was designated a national park in 1919 and a natural World Heritage Site in 1979, and remains one of the most visited national parks in the United States with over five million visitors a year.
