Overview

New York is the world's financial and cultural centre, with the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park and Broadway together forming the city that never sleeps.

History

New York began in 1624 as the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam and was renamed New York after the British took it in 1664. A surge of European immigration and the second industrial revolution made it a global financial centre in the 19th century. Landmarks followed including the Empire State Building in 1931 and the United Nations headquarters in 1952. The World Trade Center rebuilt after the attacks of 11 September has come to symbolise the city's resilience and rebirth.
