Overview
Set on a peninsula carved by the Smotrych River, the castle is enclosed by towers and thick stone walls and ranks among Ukraine's best-preserved medieval defences. A bridge links it to the old town, and its walls overlook the canyon and the old town's bell tower. The courtyards are lit at night and host knight festivals and concerts.
History
Enlarged from the 14th century by the Lithuanian grand dukes and the Polish crown, it long served as the defensive and administrative centre of Podolia, became a prison in the 19th century and a museum in the 20th.
