Overview
Built in the 11th century, Saint Sophia is among Kyiv's oldest landmarks. Thirteen domes crown walls banded in white and green, and the interior preserves 11th-century mosaics and frescoes, including an Orans Virgin assembled from about 20,000 pieces of coloured glass and stone. The surrounding national reserve includes the bell tower and monastic buildings. It joined the World Heritage List in 1990.
History
Raised in the 11th century under Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise, it served as a religious and political centre of Kyivan Rus and was remodelled in Baroque style in the 17th and 18th centuries.
