Africa's highest peak and the world's tallest freestanding mountain, with equatorial glaciers above rainforest.
Overview
At 5,895 metres, Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. It spans five climate zones, from farmland and rainforest at the base through moorland and alpine meadow to glaciers at the summit. The Marangu and Machame routes are the most popular, with summit attempts usually taking five to eight days to allow acclimatisation. It joined the World Heritage List in 1987.
History
Formed by volcanic activity some 750,000 years ago, it was first climbed in 1889 by the geographer Hans Meyer and the mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller.
