Doi Suthep Temple, Chiang Mai

Overview

Doi Suthep Temple is the most famous temple in northern Thailand, set at the summit of Doi Suthep at 1,073 metres with views over the whole of Chiang Mai. Visitors climb 306 stone steps flanked by guardian dragons, or take the cable car. The golden chedi at its heart is said to enshrine a relic of the Buddha and draws hundreds of thousands of Thai pilgrims and foreign visitors each year.

History

The temple was founded in 1383. Legend tells that a white elephant carrying a Buddha relic climbed Doi Suthep and died on the spot, marking it as sacred, whereupon the king built a temple there. Expanded over the centuries, the present complex took shape between the 16th and 20th centuries and is a masterpiece of Lanna architecture.
