Overview

The Grand Palace in Bangkok is Thailand's most famous attraction. Its glittering halls showcase the essence of traditional Thai architecture, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha stands within the grounds.

History

Built in 1782, the Grand Palace was among the first structures erected by King Rama I after he moved the capital to Bangkok. The 210,000-square-metre complex contains royal halls, temples and government offices. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha houses Thailand's most revered Buddha image, 66 centimetres tall, whose robes are changed by the King himself at each seasonal transition. The royal family moved out in 1946, but the palace is still used for state ceremonies and diplomatic occasions.
