Overview

Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of northern Thailand, its old city holding more than 300 temples, with famous elephant sanctuaries and night markets.

History

Chiang Mai was founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna kingdom and has been the political and cultural centre of northern Thailand for more than 700 years. The old city walls and moat survive, and more than 300 Buddhist temples built between the 13th and 16th centuries stand within them, including Doi Suthep and Wat Chedi Luang. It was absorbed into Siam in the early 20th century. Today it is known for fine handicrafts, cooking classes and elephant sanctuaries.
