Overview

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, known for its beautiful beaches, clear water and abundant water sports, and a leading tropical resort destination.

History

Phuket was historically an important stop on ancient trade routes and in the 17th and 18th centuries was contested by Malay, Portuguese and Dutch merchants. In 1785 the local heroine Chan and her sister led residents in repelling a Burmese invasion and are remembered as heroes. Tin mining in the 19th century brought large numbers of Chinese labourers, creating the distinctive Portuguese-Chinese colonial architecture of old Phuket Town. It developed into a resort island from the 1970s.
