Overview
Extending about 24 kilometres, Postojna is among Europe's best-known karst caves. An underground train covers roughly 3.7 kilometres, followed by 1.7 kilometres on foot past formations tens of metres tall, along halls and corridors. The cave shelters the endemic olm, sometimes called the baby dragon, which can be seen in the on-site aquarium.
History
Discovered in 1818 by locals preparing for an imperial visit and opened to the public in 1819, it was among the first caves in the world to offer guided tours and a railway.
