Overview
Barely 10 square kilometres, La Digue moves mainly by bicycle and ox cart. On the west coast, Anse Source d'Argent is broken by shallow reefs into a grid of jade-coloured pools, with giant granite boulders stacked like sculptures on the sand. Grand Anse and the nearby island of Félicité extend the island-hopping, while the interior keeps a vanilla plantation and a giant tortoise sanctuary.
History
Settled from the 18th century and long reliant on vanilla and copra, it shifted to tourism in the late 20th century and has capped development to protect the shoreline.
