Overview
In western Serbia across about 220 square kilometres, Tara is known for the great bend of the Drina and its dense conifer forest. Several viewpoints overlook the river's near-180-degree turn and its gorge, and the Sargan Eight heritage railway is close by. Brown bears, wolves and golden eagles live in the park.
History
Declared a national park in 1981 to protect the forests and mountain habitats of the Drina valley; the Sargan Eight was a narrow-gauge freight line later turned into a heritage railway.
