Overview

At the end of Belgrade's old town, Kalemegdan overlooks the meeting of the Sava and Danube. Its walls, towers and gates span Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Austrian periods, and the interior is now a park with a military museum and terraces facing the confluence and Zemun. Locals and visitors gather here in the evening.

History

A defensive site since the 3rd century BC, it passed through Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian hands, with most surviving defences dating from the 18th century.
