History
Lisbon is one of the oldest capitals in Europe, with a history of more than 3,000 years. During the Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries Portuguese explorers set out from Lisbon, opening the sea route to India and laying the foundations of a vast colonial empire. The great earthquake of 1755 destroyed much of the city, which was rebuilt to a plan overseen by the Marquis of Pombal, creating today's low-lying grid of streets. Fado, recognised as intangible cultural heritage, originated in Lisbon and carries a collective Portuguese yearning.
