Overview
On the border with Bolivia at about 3,812 metres, Titicaca is the largest lake in South America and the highest navigable lake in the world. Puno on the Peruvian side is the main departure point for boats to the Uros floating islands, where houses and boats are woven from totora reeds, and further out to Taquile Island, whose residents are known for intricate weaving.
History
The Uros moved onto floating islands to escape first the Inca and later Spanish rule, and Taquile's weaving was inscribed on the list of intangible cultural heritage in 2005.
