Overview
In southern Nepal, Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama and joined the World Heritage List in 1997. At its heart are the Maya Devi Temple and the Ashoka pillar marking the exact spot. Around the sacred garden, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Germany and other nations have built monasteries in their own styles. The sacred pool, the Bodhi tree and the peace pagoda complete a major pilgrimage site.
History
The Buddha was born here in 623 BC, Ashoka made a pilgrimage and erected a pillar in 249 BC, the pillar was rediscovered in 1896, and the site was inscribed in 1997.
