The classic trek toward the highest mountain on earth, through Sherpa villages and glacier peaks to 5,364 metres.
Overview
Usually starting at Lukla and passing Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Dingboche, the trek to Base Camp runs about 130 kilometres and takes twelve to fourteen days return. It crosses rhododendron forest, gorges and glacial terrain with close views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. Namche Bazaar is the centre of Sherpa culture and Tengboche its most important monastery.
History
After Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first ascent in 1953, the route became the world's best-known trek; Sherpa communities still live in the villages along it.
