Lofoten

Overview

Inside the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, Lofoten is known for steep peaks dropping directly into the sea, white beaches and red fishermen's cabins. The Gulf Stream keeps winters relatively mild, making it a popular place for the northern lights, while summer brings the midnight sun. Svolvær, Å and Reine are the main villages, with hiking, kayaking, whale watching and sea fishing all on offer.

History

Cod fishing and drying have long driven the economy, and the winter cod run remains the biggest event of the year; tourism and photography grew from the late 20th century.
