Geirangerfjord

Overview

Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 15 kilometres long, with cliffs up to 1,400 metres high on either side. The Seven Sisters, seven thin streams leaping from the rim into the fjord, is one of Norway's most famous waterfalls. Ways to see it include fjord cruises, kayaks and ferries, as well as the mountain roads that overlook the fjord, with the Eagle Road and Trollstigen both passing nearby.

History

Geirangerfjord was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2005 together with Nærøyfjord, recognising the exceptional glacial landscape of the Norwegian fjords. The villages along its shores have been farming and fishing since medieval times, and the abandoned farm at Skageflå on the cliff ledge bears witness to a hard mountain life.
