Overview
On the Zaan river, Zaanse Schans preserves a group of 17th and 18th-century windmills and green wooden houses. The mills once sawed timber and ground oil, pigment and mustard, powering the Netherlands' early industry. Several can be entered to see the machinery, and there are clog and cheese workshops and a traditional grocery, making it one of the country's most popular half-day trips.
History
Hundreds of windmills lined the Zaan in the 18th and 19th centuries, forming one of the world's earliest industrial zones; scattered mills and houses were brought together here in the late 20th century.
