Petronas Twin Towers

Overview

The Petronas Twin Towers rise 452 metres across 88 floors. Completed in 1998, they were the tallest buildings in the world at the time and remain the tallest twin towers. The two towers are linked by a skybridge on floors 41 and 42, and visitors can reach the observation decks on floors 41 or 86 for views over Kuala Lumpur. The design draws on geometric patterns from Islamic art, blending Malaysian tradition with modern architecture.

History

The towers were designed by the Argentine architect César Pelli and commissioned by the national oil company, becoming a symbol of Malaysia's economic surge in the 1990s. On completion in 1998 they overtook the Sears Tower in Chicago to become the world's tallest buildings, holding the record for six years until Taipei 101 took it in 2004. The complex is also known as a location for the 1999 film Entrapment.
