Overview
Made up of about 99 islands with the largest dominating, Langkawi became a duty-free area in 1987. Its curved sky bridge hangs above the rainforest and is reached by the Oriental Village cable car, with a glass section in the deck. Boat trips into the mangrove reserve show eagles, macaques and limestone caves, island-hopping links Pulau Dayang Bunting and Pulau Beras Basah, and the Seven Wells waterfall and Black Sand Beach add more.
History
Long a group of fishing and rice-farming islands, it became a duty-free area in 1987 and grew into a resort destination, and was declared a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2007.
