Overview
The south-western outer reef of South Ari Atoll is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks can be seen year-round. They can exceed ten metres, feed on plankton and are harmless, and snorkellers swim alongside at a respectful distance with a guide. Manta rays, dolphins and reef sharks are also common, and the atoll holds several resort islands.
History
Because whale sharks remain here year-round, the Maldives declared a marine protected area in 2009, limiting boat speeds and approach distances.
