Dunes of volcanic sand layered in red, brown, violet, green and blue, at their most vivid after rain.
Overview
Near Chamarel village, these dunes formed from the long weathering of volcanic basalt. Sand grains of different mineral composition settled in distinct bands of red, brown, violet, green and blue, and local accounts say they re-separate even after being mixed. Viewing platforms and boardwalks overlook the site, and Chamarel Waterfall is next door.
History
Formed over millions of years by the weathering and leaching of volcanic basalt, it is Mauritius's signature geological feature and has long been protected from foot traffic.
