Overview
About 15 km south-west of Skopje, Matka Canyon was formed by a tributary of the Vardar and dammed to create a narrow five-kilometre lake. Steep cliffs line both sides, small boats reach caves such as Vrelo, and the gorge is used for climbing and kayaking. Trails and restaurants with views line the shore, making it the easiest nature escape from the city.
History
A dam built in the 20th century created the reservoir; the caves and medieval monasteries in the gorge have long been known locally and the area is now protected.
