The old medina of Marrakech is one of Morocco's most captivating quarters, with colourful souks, refined Moorish architecture and the lively Jemaa el-Fna square.

History

Marrakech was founded in 1062 as the capital of the Almoravid dynasty. The name means Land of God in Berber, and the country name Morocco derives from it. In the Middle Ages the city was a key hub on the trans-Saharan trade routes, drawing merchants from inner Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The celebrated Jemaa el-Fna square is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, and the medina was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1985.
