Overview
Cut by the Charyn River over millions of years, the canyon runs about 154 kilometres. Its best-known section, the Valley of Castles, stretches some two kilometres, where wind has carved the sandstone into towers, columns and ramparts that shift between red, orange and yellow as the light moves. Walking and off-road routes lead down to the valley floor.
History
Shaped by river erosion and weathering, its strata date back millions of years to ancient lake deposits, making it one of Kazakhstan's best-known natural landmarks.
