Overview
Between Jordan and Israel, the Dead Sea lies about 430 metres below sea level, the lowest land point on Earth. At nearly 30% salinity its buoyancy is extreme, and swimmers float without effort. The mineral-rich black mud along the shore is widely used in skincare. Evaporation outstrips inflow, so the level keeps falling, leaving salt crusts and sinkholes along the banks.
History
A key location in biblical narrative, it became a resort destination in the 20th century for the therapeutic value of its mud and minerals.
