Overview
On the southern slopes of Mount Parnassus, Delphi was held by the Greeks to be the centre of the world. The Temple of Apollo housed the oracle, where city-states and individuals consulted the priestess Pythia before major decisions. The site holds the temple platform, theatre, stadium and the Treasury of the Athenians, while the museum below displays the famous bronze Charioteer. It joined the World Heritage List in 1987.
History
A major sanctuary from the 8th century BC, at its height between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, it declined under Rome and has been excavated systematically since 1892.
