Edinburgh Castle and Old Town

Overview

Standing on an extinct volcanic crag, Edinburgh Castle has been a stronghold since the Iron Age; most surviving buildings date from the 12th to 16th centuries and it remains the symbol of Scottish monarchy. It holds the crown jewels, the Stone of Destiny and royal apartments, and fires a one o'clock gun daily. Below it, the Royal Mile runs down to Holyrood Palace past St Giles' Cathedral and dense old-town closes.

History

A royal stronghold from the 12th century, it changed hands repeatedly in the wars between Scotland and England; the old and new towns of Edinburgh joined the World Heritage List in 1995.
