Fiji is a paradise island nation in the South Pacific, memorable for its tropical jungle, clear water and the warm Bula culture of its people.

History

Fiji comprises about 330 islands. The first settlers arrived from Southeast Asia around 3,000 years ago and later mixed with Polynesian migrants to form modern Fijian culture. Europeans first visited in the 17th century, and the 19th century brought Christianity and a plantation economy of cotton and sugar; Britain imported large numbers of labourers from India, reshaping the population. Fiji became a British colony in 1874 and gained independence in 1970. Tourism is now the most important pillar of the economy, and Fijians are renowned for their natural hospitality.
