Overview
Lying west of Viti Levu and made up of about twenty small islands, the Mamanucas are mostly volcanic isles or sand cays ringed by reefs. The water is very shallow and layered in blue-green, making it prime snorkelling, diving and surfing country. Mamanuca and Malolo are the popular resort islands, and Modriki is known from the film Cast Away; speedboats run from Port Denarau.
History
Long home to Fijian villages and copra production, it became Fiji's main tourism area as resort islands were developed in the late 20th century.
