Lavena Coastal Walk

Overview

The Lavena Coastal Walk runs along the east coast of Koro Island for about eight kilometres, crossing rainforest, coconut groves and a striking basalt shoreline to end at two spectacular swimmable waterfalls. Traditional Fijian villages lie along the route, where locals welcome visitors in customary fashion, making it a flagship of Fijian eco-tourism.

History

The walk is managed by the villages of Lavena and Waisomo, with visitor fees supporting the local community. This kind of community-managed tourism has become a model in Fiji, where customary land ownership means that access to the island's interior and coast is controlled by the villages themselves.
