Overview
Completed in 1969, Temppeliaukio was carved out of a granite hill: the raw rock face forms the interior wall, while a dome coiled from 22 km of copper strip caps the space and a ring of skylights brings in daylight. The rock is left unfinished and seeps naturally when wet. Its acoustics make it a popular concert venue.
History
Designed by the architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and opened in 1969, it is a landmark of Finnish modernist architecture.
