Overview
On the western shore of the Red Sea, Hurghada is Egypt's best-known diving and resort city. Dozens of dive sites lie offshore, coral is in good condition, and lionfish, turtles and napoleon wrasse are common; several wrecks lie further out. Most resorts run courses and boat trips, and Giftun Island can be reached for snorkelling.
History
A small fishing village before the 20th century, it grew into a resort city with Red Sea dive tourism and is now one of Egypt's main coastal destinations.
