A small town at the gateway to the Amazon, known for waterfalls, hot springs and the swing at the end of the world.
Overview
On the northern slopes of Tungurahua volcano at about 1,820 metres, Baños is Ecuador's most popular base for outdoor activities. The Ruta de las Cascadas outside town strings together waterfalls, with Pailón del Diablo dropping about 80 metres. A treehouse above the valley holds the swing at the end of the world, and hot springs, canyon swings and Amazon day trips fill out the options.
History
Long a hot-spring settlement beneath Tungurahua, it grew famous through outdoor tourism in the late 20th century; eruptions in 1999 and 2006 forced evacuations.
