Cologne Cathedral

Overview

Begun in 1248 and finished only in 1880, Cologne Cathedral took more than six centuries to complete. Its twin west spires reach 157 metres and were once the tallest structure in the world. Inside are the golden Shrine of the Three Kings, medieval stained glass and a wealth of sculpture; 533 steps up the south tower give views over the Rhine and the city. It joined the World Heritage List in 1996.

History

Started in 1248, repeatedly halted by funding and war, it was resumed to the original design in the 19th century under Prussian patronage and completed; it survived more than a dozen wartime bombing raids.
