Overview

Neuschwanstein is Germany's most famous castle, built in the 19th century and the inspiration for Disney's castle. It sits picturesquely in the Bavarian Alps.

History

Neuschwanstein was begun in 1869 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as his grand dream of a castle out of ancient legend. The cost was enormous, driving Ludwig deep into debt, and he died mysteriously in 1886 shortly after being declared mentally unfit. Still unfinished, the castle opened to the public as a tourist attraction, its interiors drawn from the myths of Wagner's operas. It now receives more than 1.3 million visitors a year, making it Germany's most popular destination.
