Český Krumlov Castle

Overview

Český Krumlov Castle is the second largest castle in the Czech Republic, its main structure built in the 13th century and later remodelled in Renaissance and Baroque styles. The castle tower looks out over the entire World Heritage town, including the meandering S-shaped Vltava River and medieval houses with red roofs and painted walls. The grounds preserve a rare Baroque theatre and fountain.

History

Founded in the 13th century, the castle became the seat of the powerful Rožmberk family in the Middle Ages and later passed to the Schwarzenbergs, who remodelled it in Baroque style. The town below was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1992.
