Overview
Founded in 1819 and the only major Cuban city established by French settlers, Cienfuegos had its historic centre inscribed in 2005. Around Parque José Martí stand the town hall, the cathedral and the Tomás Terry theatre, whose carved wood and murals are especially fine. The Prado promenade runs south to the bay, where boats head out on the water.
History
Founded in 1819 by French settlers under Spanish rule, it prospered on the sugar trade in the 19th century and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005.
