Overview
On the Hicacos peninsula on Cuba's north coast, Varadero's beach runs about 20 kilometres of fine pale sand with very shallow, calm water needing almost no breakwater. It holds the largest concentration of resort hotels in Cuba and is the main base for snorkelling, sailing and dolphin trips. To the south, Ciénaga de Zapata National Park offers crocodiles and hummingbirds, and the Ambrosio cave is nearby.
History
Developed as a resort by wealthy Americans in the early 20th century, it was nationalised after the revolution and grew into an international beach destination.
