A pink riverside palace in Dhaka, once home to the Nawab family and now a museum of modern Bengali life.
Overview
Standing on the bank of the Buriganga, Ahsan Manzil was built in the 19th century and rebuilt in 1872 into one of Dhaka's most ornate buildings. Painted pink with a tall central dome and symmetrical wings, it has 31 rooms. The interior is now a museum displaying the Nawab family's furniture, tableware, portraits and photographs, offering a view of elite Dhaka life in the 19th and 20th centuries.
History
Originally a Dutch merchant's warehouse, it became the residence of the Nawab Abdul Ghani family in the 19th century and reopened as a museum after restoration in 1985.
