A single-arch Ottoman stone bridge over the Neretva, the masterpiece and symbol of Mostar.
Overview
Built in the 16th century to a design by the Ottoman architect Mimar Hayruddin, Stari Most spans the Neretva in a single arch just four metres wide and about 24 metres high. The old town on both banks is built of stone with craft shops, and divers leaping from the bridge continue a tradition centuries old. It was inscribed with the old town of Mostar in 2005.
History
Completed between 1557 and 1566, it was destroyed in 1993, rebuilt to its original form and reopened in 2004, and inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005.
