Hohensalzburg Fortress

Overview

Built in 1077, Hohensalzburg Fortress stands on the hilltop and is the best-preserved medieval fortress in the Alpine region. It contains a museum displaying medieval weapons and royal chambers, and can be reached by funicular. The views over Salzburg's old town and the surrounding Alps are breathtaking.

History

The fortress was begun in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein and was expanded repeatedly over the following centuries, especially under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach around 1500, whose coat of arms, a turnip, can still be seen on the walls. It was never successfully taken by force, and was surrendered without a fight to Napoleon's troops in 1800. It served as a barracks and prison until the late 19th century and is now a museum.
