Overview
At 3,405 metres, Fitz Roy is the most celebrated granite massif in Patagonia, its walls close to vertical. The village of El Chaltén at its foot is Argentina's trekking capital, with trails to Laguna Capri and Laguna de los Tres taking six to eight hours return. At dawn the first light turns the rock pink — locals call it the burning Fitz Roy.
History
First recorded by the Argentine explorer Francisco Moreno in 1877 and climbed by a French team in 1952, it is named for Robert FitzRoy, captain of Darwin's ship HMS Beagle.
